A tasty and commonly found edible mushroom is the charcoal burner, notable for its wide range of colours.

The charcoal burner (Russula cyanoxantha) has a smooth cap that can grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter, usually displaying a violet hue, though blue, grey, green, and yellowish tones can also occur. This mushroom belongs to the diverse genus Russula. Unlike other Russula species, its white gills do not break when touched but can be bent. The flesh and stem are predominantly white as well. The odourless mushroom is versatile in preparation and is a popular edible mushroom. It can be found as early as early summer in deciduous and mixed forests, where it lives in symbiosis with the roots of trees, particularly beech, oak, and spruce. There is a risk of confusion, especially with greenish specimens, with the deadly poisonous death cap.
