175-year anniversary of the Austrian stamp 18.04.2025

Special stamp 175 years of Austrian postage stamps

Four stamps from different decades illustrate the varied design of postage stamps over time.

The miniature sheet for the anniversary offers a journey through 175 years of stamp history in Austria, beginning with the first Austrian stamps—the Coat of Arms issue from June 1, 1850. The second stamp comes from the “Nibelungen Saga” series. It was designed by the renowned stamp artist Wilhelm Dachauer, whose 1926 design was awarded the Thompson Medal for the world’s most beautiful stamp. Dachauer also created the 1949 stamp, which marked the first issue for the "Day of Stamps," an annual release that includes a surcharge to promote philately. The final stamp featured is the first in the “Modern Art in Austria” series from 1975. The Spiral Tree was painted especially for the stamp by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The “175-year anniversary of the stamp” is also being celebrated with a special stamp edition featuring treasures from the postal archive.
