Commemorative stamp snow globe

Erwin Perzy I – original Viennese snow globe

Stamp “Original Wiener Snow Globe” by Erwin Perzy I, with snow globe motif and emblem. Text: “ÖSTERREICH 100”, year: 2008.

In a snow globe you can admire an idyllic landscape, a building or another object throughout the year, all in a charming wintry setting.

Snow globes are known all over the world, but few people are aware that they were invented by an Austrian. At the end of the 19th century, Viennese inventor Erwin Perzy experimented with water-filled globes in his attempt to develop an especially bright light source. When he added particles of semolina, they reminded him of falling snow. He placed a miniature of the Basilica of Mariazell inside – and thus created the first “glass globe with a snow effect”. Around 1900, he founded the Vienna Original Snow Globe Factory, which is still run by the family today and where every globe is handmade. At the Snow Globe Museum, visitors can even tour the historic workshop. With this issue, the series Austrian inventions comes to a close.
