150th anniversary of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna 22.08.2022
"150 years of sustainably looking ahead" - this is the fitting theme of the anniversary celebrations of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (also known as BOKU for its German acronym).
It was founded in 1872 as the "Imperial and Royal University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences" and moved into the historic Gregor Mendel House next to Türkenschanz Park in 1896. In 1975, it became the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences. It is frequently called "Alma mater viridis", the "green nourishing mother".
BOKU is the only university in Austria whose entire research and teaching revolves around the shaping and preserving of natural environments and quality of life, the sustainable management of natural resources, and the safeguarding of nutrition and health. The university strives to combine excellent basic research with solution- and problem-oriented research to help overcome crises and global challenges such as climate change.
With more than 12,000 students in numerous bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes, BOKU is one of the leading life sciences universities in Europe.
