The first issue of the daily newspaper "Die Presse" was published on 3 July 1848. To this day, it is one of Austria's leading high-quality newspapers.
August Zang and Leopold Landsteiner founded the moderate-liberal newspaper in the revolutionary year of 1848, after censorship was briefly abolished. Following a rift in 1864, the chief editors left and founded the "Neue Freie Presse". While the old "Presse" increasingly lost readers and was discontinued in 1896, the "Neue Freie Presse" became the most influential Austrian newspaper, especially among the liberal educated middle classes. This was not least thanks to prominent authors including Bertha von Suttner, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Felix Salten, Stefan Zweig and Arthur Schnitzler who wrote for the paper. After the Anschluss to the German Reich in 1938, the newspaper became the "Neue Wiener Tagblatt" under National Socialist control. After the end of the war, Ernst Molden, a former editor of the paper, re-founded "Die Presse". At first it appeared weekly, and once again became a daily newspaper in 1948. Upon Ernst Molden's death in 1953, his son Fritz Molden became his successor.
