Day of issue of the commemorative stamp "No to violence against women" Making an unequivocal statement
Women and girls can be affected by various forms of violence. Austria is committed to actively preventing and combating violence against women and girls.
Violence against females is one of the most widespread forms of human rights violations – femicides are just the tip of the iceberg. Approximately one in three women worldwide is affected by physical, psychological, or sexual violence at some point in their lives, with the majority of cases occurring within the family or social environment.
Around the world, sixteen days of action are held annually between 25 November, the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”, and 10 December, “International Human Rights Day”, to raise awareness of the extent and different forms of violence against women and girls and the right to a life free from violence. In Austria, there are numerous support services for victims, including violence protection centres, shelters and women's refuges, the Women's Helpline, women's counselling centres for sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage or human trafficking, as well as general women's and girls' counselling services. Specialised men's counselling centres also contribute to violence prevention. Awareness campaigns provide information for consciousness-raising and also aim to promote civic courage: to stand to-gether against violence towards women and not simply look away.
