Day of issue of the commemorative stamp "Carinthian spectacled sheep"
The Carinthian spectacled sheep owes its name to the dark spots around its eyes, which resemble spectacles. While spectacled sheep were considered almost extinct after World War II, today, more than 5,000 animals exist across the province. Austrian Post pays tribute to this traditional breed of sheep and has chosen it as a new motif in the popular special stamp series "Rare domestic animal breeds". The first copies of the new special stamp were handed over by Patricia Liebermann, Head of Philately, Austrian Post, to Eduard Penker, Managing Director of the Sheep and Goat Breeders' Association of Carinthia, at the Saint Paul monastery in Lavanttal during the "Carinthian Spectacled Sheep Breeders' Meeting 2023".
