First day of commemorative stamp technical innovation, beer mat
Cheers!
As a technical innovation this year, Austrian Post is issuing an original miniature sheet in the form of a beer mat with a removable postage stamp.
The square sheet, with rounded corners and typical size, not only looks like a real beer mat but is also made from the original material of wood pulp board with a thickness of 1.4 millimetres. The extraordinary thickness and absorbency of the material ultimately made production a real challenge. Some of the bubbles in the beer foam on the front of the sheet have been enhanced with a special tactile relief varnish. The die-cut, gummed postage stamp features a foaming glass of beer and can easily be detached from the beer mat.
Beer is a traditional, millennia-old beverage that is particularly popular in Austria, with a per capita consumption of around 100 litres per year. Water, hops, malt, and yeast are the basic ingredients of beer; alcohol content and taste vary depending on the brewing method and type of beer. The alcohol in beer has proven harmful health effects when consumed regularly and in larger quantities; moreover, the drink is also very high in calories. However, beer also contains vitamins, especially of the B group, as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Nevertheless, beer is not necessarily recommended as a source of nutrients. Beer, like any alcoholic beverage, should fundamentally be consumed only in moderation, responsibly, and in compliance with the legal age restrictions.
