Shipments to the USA

Important information for shipments to the USA

The United States has suspended the duty exemption for commercial items with a value of up to USD 2,500 from all countries. As a result, every item must be cleared through customs, regardless of its value.

The following rules apply:

  • The duty-free import threshold for goods valued below USD 2,500 into the United States has been abolished for all countries.
  • Shipments with a goods value exceeding USD 2,500 cannot be sent to the United States via Austrian Post.
  • Exceptions apply to gifts and documents:
    • Gift consignments sent from one private individual to another, with a value of up to USD 100 and declared as "Gift", will remain duty-free.
    • Documents can continue to be sent without restriction.
  • Customers sending commercial goods or gifts with a value exceeding USD 100 are required to pay the applicable import duties and taxes at the time of posting.
    • These charges are calculated using the online customs form. It is mandatory to use this Customs Form for all Shipments (Customs form - PostAG)
    • To calculate the charges, the 6-digit Harmonized System (HS) tariff code of the shipment contents must be provided. Austrian Post is unable to assist with the identification of the correct tariff code. Further information is available here: EU Customs Tariff (TARIC) - Taxation and Customs Union.
    • An overview of the expected charges will be displayed once the customs form has been completed. These charges may include customs duties, import VAT, and a handling fee.
    • Please note that the displayed charges are estimates based on the information provided. If inaccurate customs data is submitted, such as incorrect goods value, country of origin, or tariff code, resulting in higher import duties and taxes, any additional costs incurred will subsequently be charged to the sender.
    • When posting a shipment at a post office or partner outlet, both the postage and the total import charges applicable in the destination country must be paid at the time of posting.
  • Business customers can use the Postal Delivered Duty Paid (PDDP) shipping solution. post.at/parcel-international-pddp and post.at/letter-international-pddp
