EN
The Common Mallow is this year's design for the loyalty bonus stamp, with which Austrian Post thanks its subscribers for their loyalty.
The attractive five-petalled flowers of the Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris) range from pink to violet. It blooms from May to September and can be found along roadsides, on fallow land, and in many gardens. The plant’s round seeds resemble small cheese wheels, and in the past, they were used to make a porridge for children—hence the alternative name "cheese mallow." Due to its mucilage content, the Common Mallow is a well-established medicinal plant, as it forms a protective film on irritated mucous membranes, helping with tickly coughs and throat infections. The dried leaves and flowers are used to make tea, but they can also be added fresh to salads. When cooked, the leaves help to thicken soups, and the unripe seeds can even be enjoyed as a snack.
