Day of issue of the commemorative stamp "300-year anniversary of the Upper Belvedere"
The Belvedere with its two palaces and magnificent garden is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque ensembles in the world. The Upper Belvedere of the "beautiful view", as it is called in Italian, celebrates its 300th anniversary this year. Austrian Post is honouring this occasion with a new commemorative stamp. The Belvedere Palace was designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, an art lover and the most important general of the Habsburg Monarchy. The Upper Belvedere was completed in 1723 and used by the Prince for his art collections and for representational purposes.
After Prince Eugene's death, Maria Theresa acquired the entire complex and made the Upper Belvedere the exhibition venue for the imperial collections and one of the first public museums in the world. Today the Belvedere is known not only for the Austrian and international works of art on display there, such as Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss", but also for its historical relevance. In 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed in the marble hall of the Upper Belvedere and presented to the people from the balcony by Foreign Minister Leopold Figl.
